Mt Everest, from the time I can remember, has always captured my attention. After all, it is the top of the world! There are many definitions to these words “Top of the World”. It represents what many of us try to achieve in our everyday life in many different ways. The accomplishments and challenges Sir Edmund Hillary had undertaken and the way they were conquered is hugely significant in our history. They were achieved without today’s technology and expedition sponsorships. They were achieved with vast lung capacity, physical prowess and they were achieved by a humble person. When Sir Edmund Hillary passed away January 2008, I felt a need to do something to help keep his legacy alive. To me, he personifies what we all try to be; his integrity, honesty, his respect for others and the way he say's how it is. The event started to shape in my mind. It became only natural to partner up with the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation who are positioned around the corner from Taupo. They have designed a programme that has our Taupo youth visit and journey through special places in the local area, helping them achieve a sense of place, while facing challenges that will be overcome through personal skill and courage with support and trust from team mates. With Mount Ruapehu, being the very first mountain Sir Edmund Hillary climbed as a youth of 16, everything fell into place. At this point the Everest Charity Ball was born. Bi-annually, this event has huge potential to raise funds for our Taupo youth. The only way it will work is to have your support by attending the Ball.
Let’s together remember our most famous New Zealand icon and again, let’s make available, for our Taupo youth, a life changing experience. See you at the 2010 Everest Charity Ball. Ingrid Fleming EVENT DIRECTOR
